“Alissa Sammarco’s I See Them Now investigates the interplay of memory and reflection—how do time and personal development inform what one knows or one thinks one knows about the self, relationships, and persona histories? Sammarco crafts poems that are akin to monuments and ruins, wherein the reader is witness to narratives that thrum with the confidence of lucid recollections, while others render lyrical, fractured remembrances that locate their integrity in the confession of what is forgotten and what needn’t be restored. Enrobed in saudades, Sammarco’s wistful, earnest, and dolorous collection is a testament to the complexity of love and the circumstances that estrange us from or compel us toward this enigmatic, capricious, gorgeous, and needful force.”—Yalie Saweda Kamara, 2022-2023 Cincinnati and Mercantile Library Poet Laureate and author of Besaydoo

“In I See Them Now, Sammarco reveals Nature’s abundance, secrets told and kept, passing shadows of time, family—all a woman’s life made bittersweet mystery by her shaping of lines both graceful and sumptuous.”—Karen Novak, author of Five Mile House

“Hitch a ride with this poet as she travels, a middle-aged woman probing and examining life moments and memories, their ‘moving and shifting and changing moods.’ Who are the ‘Them?’ Mother, sons, friends, relatives, husband, lovers, ‘the Ex’ and most interestingly, and poignantly, the poet’s own self. With a keen and focused poetic eye, and a flair for apt image and metaphor, Alissa Sammarco stays honest and ever attentive to the complexities of relationships. What I feel most as a reader is the heritage of love and struggle that lies beneath, that undergirds these poems.”—Chuck Stringer, author of the forthcoming By Fowlers Fork
